What’s Going On: Plant Stress Reduction Technologies: Useful After the Freeze?

How will the plants recover? That is the question.  Citrus was the hardest hit while most other crops including: strawberries, leafy veggies, avocados, ornamentals were also damaged.

Fortunately, new technologies which address “Stress Management” are being introduced into the market right now.  At the same time, some older and well understood technologies continue to hold their place in the market. All of these technologies deserve consideration.  These technologies are said to induce cold tolerance, heat tolerance, and drought tolerance. Maybe they have a place in freeze recovery.

The newest of these is “Invinsa” technology announced by AgroFresh on Feb 5, 2007.  Invinsa is based on the action of 1-MCP, the active ingredient in “SmartFresh” which is used for reduction of ethylene induced stress responses in stored fruits and flowers.

The oldest of the new is the “Aminofit” product line from BIOIBERICA recently introduced by the U S based ClawEl Speciality Products division of Brandt Consolidated. Aminofit-fl (foliar) and Aminofit-rt (root) have been used in Spain for the past twenty years. This technology is based on a complex mixture of L-amino acids which are applied to the plant before, during or after the stress induction period (heat, drought, cold).  These amino acids mobilize plant metabolites quickly as there is no need for  translocation of applied nitrogen from the roots.  This may be useful when leaves and/or roots are damaged.

Natural Cytokinins used as foliar or soil applications may be the best known of the stress management technologies.  One of the most interesting of these products is Triggrr from Westbridge Ag Products.  Triggrr contains Cytokinin but also produces simultaneous auxin like responses.  This dual action makes Triggrr a very interesting prospect for simultaneous root growth and bud initiation.

“Invinsa” contains 1-MCP… 1 –MCP is the molecule which is responsible for interrupting the plant’s response to internally produced ethylene.  Since ethylene is induced by stress and since ethylene makes plants “get old”, the use of 1-MCP at times of heat, drought or freeze is beneficial.

Aminofit-FL and Aminofit-RT contain 2% and 1% total nitrogen respectively. These products are not fertilizers, they are stimulants.  Amino acids supplied during times of plant stress have the effect of stimulating  the plant’s response to stress  faster than if the plant was required to absorb nitrogen and convert that nitrogen to amino acids.  Since the objective in recovery from a freeze is to have the plant quickly re establish its vigor, these amino acid treatments are a good idea.

Triggrr contains Cytokinins and fermentation products which produce auxin responses in plants. This means that plants have stimulated “rooting” and stimulated “shooting” responses.  Root initiation and shoot initiation are desirable after stress…if the plant can get enough nutrients to support growth…especially calcium for cell growth.

Fast start freeze recovery can be accomplished with a number of different techniques….a combination of several of them seems to make sense:

For example, what about a mixture of Aminofit and Triggrr to facilitate nutrient uptake and plant growth while Invinsa protects the physiology of reproductive structures?

A number of very interesting plant growth stimulants have been developed over the past few years. Others are still in the pipeline.

The growth stimulant manufacturers may want to explore possible co marketing of their products and technologies.  There are several possible “Tank Mix” combinations which would be interesting to test.
