CHLORINE
BASED SANITATION CHEMISTRY MAY NOT BE THE BEST BET ANYMORE……
THE
PEROXYACETIC ACID/HYDROGEN “DIOXIDE” SANITIZERS MAY BE POSITIONED TO REPLACE
CHLORINE ON FRUIT AND IN SEPARTION TANKS.
OZONE
GENERATORS STILL HAVE AN IMPORTANT PLACE IN PRODUCT SANITATION AND DECAY
CONTROL. OZONE GAS INJECTED INTO RINSE WATER MAKES A SUPERIOR SANITIZER
SOLUTION.
PEROXIOXYACETIC
ACID AND OZONE GAS SANITATIONS DO NOT HAVE RESIDUES! THEY BREAK DOWN TO
OXYGEN!

What’s Going On: Massive Freeze Hits
the West….Aftermath: Technical Update #1
California, Arizona and parts of
Texas have been hit by another “Artic Express”. This is the first freeze of
such magnitude since 1998 and the results have been devastating. Due to the
time of year, Navel oranges have been the most damaged, while all other crops
in the ground or on the tree have had damage. Estimates are that the
wholesale value of these losses may be around $1 Billion in California alone!
Growers and Packers are faced with what
to do next…in
most cases they will be trying salvage whatever packable fruit are remaining
after the mandatory waiting period. As you know, California regulations
require that the fruit be allowed to remain on tree for a period of time in
order for the symptoms of frost damage to develop.
For citrus packers the aftermath of the
freeze will involve trying to separate the good fruit from the non packable
fruit.
Much of this separation will be performed using the old fashioned water
flotation technique. This method has been supplanted in some operations by
electronic graders capable of evaluating internal quality, but most packers
still rely on the floatation tanks which have been sitting in storage for
about ten years.
Sanitation will be an issue in the
floatation separators. Fortunately new technology exists in the form of a new
sanitizer known as Oxidate. This material is a very good “oxidizer” and will
be less damaging to your equipment that chlorine or bleach. The balance of
this newsletter discusses Oxidate.
The next newsletter, Aftermath
Technical Update #2 will focus on new techniques for plant growth recovery
after a freeze.

A new family of
sanitizers has been introduced since the “freeze of 1998”. These are the
peroxyacetic acid/ hydrogen “doioxide” sanitizers. This family of products
has been perfected by the company BioSafe Systems.
The current flag ship
product for BioSafe Systems in is known as Oxidate.
The next generation
product for California is known as Storox. Oxidate is labeled for
California today, Storox will be labeled within a few months.
Storox is available
for all states outside of California. So packers in Arizona and Texas have instant access.
Oxidate and Storox
are made up of peroxyacetic acid and hydrogen dioxide. They LEAVE NO
RESIDUE! That is because their active ingredient breaks down to oxygen!
Oxidate and Storox
are good sanitizers. They may by thought of as oxidizers roughly in the
class of ozone….but they are liquid formulations. You can buy them in jugs
and drums!

Oxidate and Storox
are U S EPA registered bactericides, (Oxidate is registered in CA, Storox
is working its way through California’s DPR).
Oxidate and Storox
are registered outside of CA. For example: Arizona, Texas, Florida!!!
Oxidate and Storox
are OMRI listed.
Oxidate and Storox
have a Zero Hour REI.
Oxidate and Storox
do not require a residue tolerance on fruits and vegetables.
Oxidate and Storox
will not eat your tanks like Chlorine will eat your tanks!
