What’s Going On: New Technology Updates

First Annual Ag Expo: Gulf Coast Research Center, Balm, FL: Dec 7-8, 2006

What an excellent event this was!  We attended both days and found the program, contacts and facilities to be excellent and well worth the trip from California to Florida!

There were several “take home” messages coming from the podium during the talk.  These will be featured throughout this issue of “Heart Beat”.

Charles H. Bronson, Florida State Agricultural and Consumer Affairs Commissioner delivered the Key Note Speech.

Charles is a great communicator.  One of his special messages is that he envisions the State of Florida taking great advantage of the Agricultural Waste produced on its farms and ranches.  His vision is that Microbiological Conversion of Cellulose to Ethanol will eventually produce 30% of the annual combustible fuel requirement for Florida.

If the science can support this vision, if follows that Farmers will have one income stream to cover their overhead costs.  MICROBIOLOGISTS OUT THERE! Its time to focus on the possibilities!

For more info on the Ag Expo search for Florida Ag Expo.

The Ag Expo was financially supported entirely by the “Vendors/Exhibitors” and the University Experiment Station.  No fees were charged to participants!  Very nice support from industry. Very nice cooperative effort!

This year’s Ag Expo focus was strictly on Strawberries and Tomatoes. Next year’s focus in likely to widen to other important FL veggies.

For those who are considering attending next year, remember this—400 Growers attended this year! (For a confidential research report on these or any other topic, click on http://www.thedawsonco.com and send us an email!)

Food Safety: Tid-Bits

Spray Rigs & Nurse Tanks - Spread Salmonella?

Craig Mowry, Glades Crop Care, presented an excellent talk on current food safety topics.  He was the first speaker for Friday’s Ag Expo technical session.  Among other things, Craig made us aware that: Salmonella bacteria has been proven to be transported from flowers to fruit when Salmonella laden water has been sprayed on to the flowers.  This finding strongly suggests that bacterial contaminated water in spray applications may inoculate flowers and eventually contaminate the fruit.

Moral of the story: Use sanitized water in spray rigs and nurse rigs! Applied and Environmetal Microbiology, Oct 2001, p. 4760-4764
